Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development: Level 2

Level 2 is Conventional Moral Reasoning: Moral interpretation looks at the  regulations and conventions of society, together with folkways,  traditions,  values, and laws, and considers ethics based on these.

Stage 3: Good Girl/Nice Boy or Conformity or Instrumental Conformity: Moral  behaviors are based on what will  cause the person to  seem to be a virtuous individual to those around them. Children  in the middle school ages fall into this class, which also ties into Erikson’s psychosocial development stage of Group Identity vs. Group Identity Diffusion.

Somebody in this  phase would say “No, he’ll look like a  crook and people won’t like him  since he steals” or “Yes, he’ll  appear to be a hero and  everybody like him for saving her life.”

Stage 4: Law and Order or Law of the Land or Judgment:  Ethical actions judged on the person being a respectable citizen and obeying the  law set by the country they live in, but does not consider why those laws are formed to begin with.

An individual in this stage would say “No, he shouldn’t take the  drug because it’s against the law.”
