As you know from class, each week the English Composition classes will be issued several writing challenges geared toward practicing your writing skills.

Sometimes these challenges will contain specific instructions for writing one of the three types of essays we will be covering in class, and sometimes they will be generic assignments that can be responded to as you see fit.

For the first challenge, the goal is for me (the instructor!) to gain an understanding of your current writing skills so that I can adjust class to your current skill level. In this case, I want to see what you can do with nothing but a writing prompt for a topic.

Instructions:

Register an user account on the web site so that you can submit your response.

Read the question carefully.

Pause and think about how you wish to respond to the question.

Open up your favorite word processing program (Word, Notepad, etc.)

Write your essay! I want to see how you would write if you had to take the test right now.

Post your essay as a response to this page. Once you log in, there should be a text box at the bottom of the page under the words “Leave A Reply”. Copy and paste your essay into this section, then click “Submit Comment”. You can choose to leave your name off of this, put a nick name, etc.

Watch for a reply! I will try to review and post comments on these essays as quickly as possible. If the essay needs extensive help, I will print the essay, make specific notes on it, and pass it back the next class meeting.

The Second Writing Prompt: Social Networking Sites

This prompt is closer to the style you will expect to see on the English Composition Exam from Excelsior College. The goal of this particular prompt is to force you to write about something that many of you may not know much about! The goal is not to have you go research a bunch of extra stuff, it’s to see how well you can support your opinion on a topic that you might not know much about.

Social-Networking Sites

You have 60 minutes to compose an essay on the topic assigned below.

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and assignment.

“One way to understand social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace is to consider that younger digital natives are not necessarily being exhibitionists when they post photographs of themselves and share personal details there. Instead, these users are living a life in which consciousness is spread out evenly over two platforms: real life and the Web. Rather than feeling schizophrenic or somehow pathological, digital natives understand that these two realms divide the self much as speech and the written word divide language, a division that humans have lived with for a long time without going bonkers.
(Sarah Frere-Jones, “Living on the Radio,” The New Yorker, April 20, 2009)”

Assignment: When young people use social networking sites, including MySpace and Facebook, are these sites serving to enhance kids’ social lives or are they actually being used as a substitute for human interaction? Compose an essay supporting your opinion on this matter. Be sure to support your side of the argument by using examples from things you have read, studies you have heard of, personal obersvations and experiences, etc. Include in your post your outline and writing planning, as we have completed essays in the Week 2 and Week 3 In-Class Activities.

Hello students! Please read the following announcements regarding our recent renovations and vending machine placements!

First, we are happy to announce that as part of our new 5-year lease with our office suite, we were able to arrange a renovation project to enlarge one of our classrooms. This means that there should no longer be wait-lists for our NURX classes! General Education classes will still be limited to 20 students, as only one room was able to be enlarged. Keep this in mind when registering for these classes. Registration deadlines will still apply, as these are unrelated to class size. We hope to have this project complete within the next few weeks.

Second, the Vendor who provided our Snack and Drink machines has decided that we are too healthy! They have determined that we do not meet the minimum amount of sales per month they require to leave vending machines in our facility and have removed the machines. Until we are able to make alternative vending arrangements, please be sure to bring your own drinks and snacks to class.

On a related note, there is a refrigerator in the kitchen/break room for you to keep items in. However, please DO NOT take items out of this refrigerator that you did not bring in. We will still provide coffee and hot water for tea, but items in the refrigerator belong to your fellow students and your instructors and are not communally available for consumption. Please respect this and only eat your own lunch or supper so that they do not go hungry or thirsty. The refrigerator will be completely cleared every Friday so be sure to take anything you do not want thrown away home!

Thank you so much! – Academic Support Staff

Your First Writing Prompt:
For this challenge I just want to see what you can write. Develop an essay detailing the reasons you became a nurse. Be sure to use paragraph structures and support your reasons through facts or examples.

Hello students! Here are the activities and homework assignments for the first week of English Composition!

In class today, the first topic we discussed included the general requirements for this test and a discussion of the three essay types you will be expected to complete. These are the Persuasive, Revision Strategy, and Literary Analysis styles of essay. We will discuss these more on the class days dedicated to each essay type.

The second topic was a discussion of methods you can use at home to prepare for this exam. These include improving your own comfort level when using a computer, primarily through composing essays on your computer and posting them to the appropriate sections of this student website for review by your instructor.

Another good method you can do to improve your score is to ensure you have practiced your typing skill to the best of your abilities. Because you have exactly 3 hours to write 3 essays, you must be able to quickly compose and type your essay. If your typing skill is lacking, you should do anything you can to improve this while preparing for your test. Try checking out this link to a Free Typing Tutor.

In addition, it can help your score on this exam to just read a book while learning to write. Go to your local book store, library, or used book store even and pick up something that interests you. By reading a book, you will be exposed to proper sentence structure and begin to experience what makes something “sound good” to you, in a way that is fun instead of boring! You should also learn some new vocabulary words this way as well, and those big “20 dollar words” can improve your score if used correctly in your essay.

The third topic we covered was a brief overview of the proper form of an essay. Don’t worry, we’ll come back to this a lot! The most important thing to remember is that your essay should always follow the 3 to 5 rule: 3 to 5 sentences per paragraph, 3 to 5 paragraphs per essay.

The first sentence should always be a Topic Sentence and give a brief introduction to the topic of that paragraph. The second, third, and fourth sentences should be facts or examples that support the topic of your paragraph. The fifth sentence should be a conclusion that both sums up the paragraph just completed and introduces the next topic of the essay.

There’s a pretty quick way to remember how to write an essay too: It’s exactly the same! The first paragraph should be an introduction to your topic and should contain your Thesis Statement (we’ll cover these later). Paragraphs two through four should be sub-topics that support the Thesis, or the topic that you want to discuss or the point of view you want to support with your essay. Finally, the last paragraph should be a summary or conclusion stating the final message of your paper.

Finally, we discussed one method of brainstorming to get the class started with their first homework. We first had everyone in class call out some general topics that sounded like fun things to write about, then circled related topics and drew lines to show they were grouped. If you right down everything that comes to mind when trying to come up with an idea for an essay, you will soon begin to see connections between the various topics. These can then be your sub-topics for your body paragraph!

——————————————————————Brainstorming————————————–

In class today we also went over The Six Journalistic questions:

1. Who?

Who is the audience?

Who is concerned about it?

Who is my reader?

Who else has talked or written about this issue

2. What?

What is the issue? What is my postion

What assumption do I make about the issue?

What point can I make about it?

3. Where?

Where did I learn about this issue? Where did an event (or events) occur related to the issue? Where are people most concerned about this issue? Where are people writing or talking about this issue?

4. When?

When did this problem become an issue? When did I first learn about it or issues like it?

When were people first infuenced by it?

5. Why?

Whay do I think the way I do about the issue? Why am I taking the approach I am in the essay? Why does this issue anger, upset, or influence people?

6. How?

How has this issue or my involvement in it affected me? my community? How does it affect others? How can I plan my essay to best communicate my point?

Your Homework: Writing Challenge: Why did you become a nurse?

Then, if you’re feeling ambitious, choose one of the three topics we discussed and mapped on the board, and post your essay below on this page.

INSTRUCTOR NOTE: PLEASE complete at least one of these essays before next week’s class. If I don’t know what your writing skills and weaknesses are, I cannot help you prepare for this essay exam.
